Abitibi Recycling is the largest recycler of newspapers
in North America. Our goal in 2001 is to recover more than 2.75 million tons of recyclable paper to supply our newsprint manufacturing
requirements. With operations in several US and Canadian cities, Abitibi Recycling offers both community and commercial paper
recycling services.
Paper collected through the company's well-known Paper Retriever
program is directed to processing centers where it is sorted into various grades and prepared for shipment. It is then routed
to our de-inking facilities and mills where it is used to manufacture 100% recycled content newsprint. This community-based
program operates in over 6,000 schools, churches and non-profit organizations. Abitibi Recycling pays these organizations
for the paper they collect at their locations.
Abitibi Recycling has received special recognition for
the financial contributions made to help fund special projects and activities at each location. In 2001, Abitibi Recycling
will pay participating organizations in excess of $2 million dollars for paper they collected from their community. In addition,
by diverting this paper from the waste stream, over 2.2 million cubic yards of landfill space will be saved.
